Plot Summary
Alex Volkov is a devil blessed with the face of an angel and cursed with a past he can’t escape.
Driven by a tragedy that has haunted him for most of his life, his ruthless pursuits for success and vengeance leave little room for matters of the heart.
But when he’s forced to look after his best friend’s sister, he starts to feel something in his chest:
A crack.
A melt.
A fire that could end his world as he knew it.
Ava Chen is a free spirit trapped by nightmares of a childhood she can’t remember.
But despite her broken past, she’s never stopped seeing the beauty in the world…including the heart beneath the icy exterior of a man she shouldn’t want.
Her brother’s best friend.
Her neighbor.
Her savior and her downfall.
Theirs is a love that was never supposed to happen—but when it does, it unleashes secrets that could destroy them both…and everything they hold dear.
My Review
Twisted Love is the first book of the series, which can be read as standalones but I prefer to read them in order because characters and events appear through the books and it’s a buzzkill to read about a couple’s relationship when you haven’t read their story yet.
I stumbled on these series during one of my scrollings through the kindle store to find even more books to add to my huge TBR pile and I’m glad I did. I love these kinds of stories and had a blast with this one.
It follows the story of Ava, who has an overprotective brother that needs to make a trip but doesn’t want to leave her alone so he asks his best friend, the dark and mysterious Alex Volkov to live temporarily at his house which is right next to his sister’s. Ava and Alex’s first encounter (at least recent) begins on a rainy night when Ava calls her brother to pick her up but it is Alex who shows and he seems none too happy about it.
In this book you’ll find the ‘brother’s best friend’ trope which always starts with the brother giving a fair ‘no getting touchy with the sister’ warning and ‘Surprise! Surprise!’, he gets touchy with the sister, but not before all the grumpiness and eye rolling needed in this kind of story.
Alex is an alpha male (my favourite!) with a dark past and some dark connections. He’s been Josh’s best friend for years but he has an ulterior motive.
I identified myself so much with Ava. She’s such a cheerful character, always seeing the ‘glass half full’ and always trying to see the good in people. That is why she digs deeper and deeper into Alex’s personality because, despite the exterior, she believes he’s actually a good person. Their chemistry is off the charts and the sexual scenes are HOT!
I think the pace was quick and I was never bored. A really great read and, who knows, maybe a reread in the future to cure a reading slump.
Tropes you can expect:
- Brother’s best friend
- Grumpy/ Sunshine
- Forced proximity
- Only one bed
- Hates everyone but her
- Touch her and you die
Quotes
“You are the light to my dark, Sunshine,” he said in a raw voice. His lips brushed against mine as he spoke. “Without you, I’m lost.”
“I grasped her chin and angled her face toward mine. “Tell me who or what I need to kill,” I growled. “What happened at your father’s house?” “I told you, nothing. It was just the lake.” Ava eked out a wobbly smile. “You can’t kill a lake.” “I’ll drain every fucking lake and ocean in the world if I have to.”
“Because I love her!” I slammed my hands on the table. “There, happy? I love her so much I would rather give her up than hurt her. But if you think I’m letting her go to another country alone, with no protection, you’ve got another think coming. Now give me her fucking flight info.”
“That’s my girl. Hate me. Don’t cry over me. Never cry over me. I’m not worth it.”
“I’m trying to be nice, okay? We’re stuck with each other for the next year, so I want to make our lives easier. Just take the damn cookies. You can eat them, throw them out, feed them to your pet snake Nagini, whatever.” His mouth twitched. “Did you just compare me to Voldemort?”
