Sinopse

A acção passa-se num tempo em que os sábios Druidas se recolhiam nas florestas para perpetuarem o Conhecimento que em eras passadas lhes fora transmitido pelos Seres Mágicos. O berço da heroína desta história, Catelyn, e dos seus cinco irmãos varões, situa-se na Grande Ilha, cada vez mais fustigada pelos ataques dos Viquingues. Os senhores locais formaram uma Aliança para os repelirem, consolidando essa política através de casamentos combinados entre os herdeiros das grandes famílias. Depois de uma infância paradisíaca, Catelyn cresce num mundo cada vez mais violento, assistindo impotente às manipulações da maldosa Myrna, a protegida do homem com quem o pai de Catelyn destinou casá-la.

A Minha Opinião

Eu não poderia escrever reviews dos vários livros que leio actualmente sem prestar homenagem à saga que me introduziu no mundo da leitura. A Última Feiticeira foi o primeiro livro de fantasia que li e que me consumiu por completo. Tinha 15 anos na altura em que o livro foi lançado e que o li e ainda hoje, passados todos estes anos, tem um lugar muito especial na minha memória e um lugar de destaque na minha estante. São estes pequenos detalhes que nos fazem distinguir entre as boas leituras e aquelas que nos marcam para sempre e que por isso as denominamos de ‘perfeitas’.

Neste primeiro livro fiquei completamente enredada na história dos irmãos e sofria com o destino dos mesmos. Chorei a morte de Tristan mal sabendo na altura que me iria apaixonar completamente pelo viking que aí vinha, o meu primeiro namorado literário. O livro termina de tal forma aberta e num momento de tensão, que me levou imediatamente a ler a segunda obra.

Plot Summary

The action takes place in a time when the wise Druids gathered in the forests to perpetuate the Knowledge that in ages past had been transmitted to them by Magical Beings. The birthplace of the heroine of this story, Catelyn, and her five male siblings, is located on the Big Island, which is increasingly beset by attacks from the Viquingues. The local lords formed an Alliance to repel them, consolidating this policy through arranged marriages between the heirs of the great families. After a paradisiacal childhood, Catelyn grows up in an increasingly violent world, watching helplessly the manipulations of the evil Myrna, the protégé of the man Catelyn’s father intended her to marry.

My Review

I couldn’t write reviews of the various books I currently read without paying tribute to the saga that introduced me to the world of reading. The Last Witch was the first fantasy book I read that completely consumed me. I was 15 years old at the time the book was released and I read it and even today, after all these years, it has a very special place in my memory and a prominent place on my bookshelf. It’s these small details that make us distinguish good readings and from those that mark us forever and that is why we call them ‘perfect’.

In this first book I was completely entangled in the story of the brothers and suffered with their fate. I mourned Tristan’s death hardly knowing at the time that I would fall completely in love with the Viking to come, my first literary boyfriend. The book ends in such an open-ended and tense moment that it immediately prompted me to read the second work.
